Full course description
By the end of this course, you will be able to hold intermediate conversation on familiar topics in German, understand aspects of daily life and culture in a German-speaking environment, and comprehend the complex elements of German grammar.
Based on the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning, the objectives for our German II course are:
- Communication: Students engage in conversations about topics such as Typical German - Typical American?, Giving Directions, Birthday, Shopping. They present information on different topics.
- Cultures: Students gain an understanding of different German cultural practices and products, for example: Polite Forms, Meals, Public Transportation, Money (Euro), Computers and the German phone system.
- Connections: Students learn about different aspects of German culture which connect to other disciplines, such as history, math and geography.
- Comparisons: Students learn about language in general and about the concept of culture by comparing German language and culture to their own.
- Communities: Students use German beyond the school setting by working with the information from selected German websites.

Review Chapter: Students read the story used in German I as a booklet and review German I vocabulary and grammar.
Chapter 11: Polite Forms, Weather, Breakfast, der-Words, Question Words, Past Perfect, Verb Kickers
Chapter 12: Filling out Forms, Suppenkaspar, Vowel-changing Verbs, Verb Kickers, Public Transportation, Euro, Modals
Chapter 13: German Towns, Typical German?, Rooms and Furniture, Comparisons, Reflexive Verbs, Two-Way Prepositions
Chapter 14: nach vs. zu, Simple Past, Adjective Endings, gern, Telephone, Berlin, German-Americans
Chapter 15: Immigrants in Germany, Giving Directions, Future Tense, Verb Endings, Simple Past
Chapter 16: Hamburg, German History to 1914, Body, Metric System, Infinitives with zu, Vowel-changing Verbs, A German Pirate, Separated Verbs
Chapter 17: Ordinal Numbers, Birthday, Modals without 2nd Verb, Demonstrative Pronouns
Chapter 18: Fairy Tale, Participles of Be-er Verbs, Shopping, Subjunctive, Vacation
